Gan weithio'n bennaf gyda phaent a cherfluniau, mae gwaith Chris Higson yn cael ei ysgogi gan ei ddiddordebau mewn diwylliant, hanes, bwyd a thraddodiadau. Mae'r rhain yn sbarduno cyfnodau dwys o greadigrwydd a dysgu, gan drawsnewid ei stiwdio yn yr ystafell wely yn ofod lle mae'r pynciau hyn yn ennill bywyd o'u pennau eu hunain.
Mae llawer o waith Chris hyd yma wedi canolbwyntio ar ei brofiadau ym Mecsico. Pan oedd yn fachgen ifanc, roedd am fod yn archeolegydd ym Mesoamerica; er na lwyddodd i wneud hynny, defnyddiodd ei brofiadau ym myd bwyd i ymchwilio ymhellach i'r diwylliant, gan ddatblygu cariad at y cysylltiadau rhwng bwyd a hanes Mecsico. Yn fuan, daeth cyfle i deithio'n helaeth ar draws y wlad, ac o ganlyniad, cychwynnodd gyfnod hir ac eang o ymchwil creadigol.
Primarily working with paint and sculpture, Chris Higson’s practice is propelled by his interests in culture, history, food and traditions which spark intense periods of creativity and learning, turning his bedroom studio into a space where these subjects take on a life of their own.
Much of Chris’s practice to date has revolved around his experiences in Mexico. As a young boy he wanted to be an Archaeologist in Mesoamérica, clearly failing at that, he used his experiences in food to delve further into the culture, falling in love with the relationships between Mexico’s cuisine and history. The opportunity soon arose to travel the country extensively and as a result, has birthed a long, extensive period of creative research.

Pisilnekmej is an installation of Chris Higson’s sculptures and Tacho Anguilar’s sound and monograph focusing on the fascinating complex relationship between the indigenous Maseual community of northeastern Puebla and the native stingless honey bee the coexist together.
Inspired by the hive building of the Pisilnekmej bee themselves the three cob sculptures and handmade pine plinths are all constructed using materials foraged from Chris’ local surroundings. Three monuments to the relationship of the Pisilnekmej and Maseual, a reinterpretation of a traditional manmade hive, a human pimento flower celebrating both the pollination of the bee but also the Maseual belief that humans and nature are not separate realms, and the ‘Nektenan’, the mother bee, who’s form is inspired by the hives they live in and the tunnel entrances they create.
